Grace - French tutor

Salut!

My name is Grace, and I’m a French tutor. For my undergraduate studies, I graduated from Oxford with a First in French and History (BA), and I stayed on to do my Masters in French, for which I received a Distinction last year. I absolutely love studying, and helping others to enjoy it too!

I’ve been tutoring French for several years, for GCSE, A-Level and Oxbridge admissions tests. I’ve got loads of other teaching experience too; I taught English in a French primary and secondary school during my year abroad, I’ve volunteered as an English teacher in Oxford, and I also do lots of History tutoring.

How I can support you

For French, I’m able to cover any level (primary, secondary, GCSE, A-Level, university). I can help with any part of the course (reading/writing/listening/speaking), as well as essay writing, translation, and literature studies. Up to university level, I’m able to cover lots of topics related to 19th/20th/21st Century literature.

I’ve always loved teaching, and my career goal is to become a university lecturer. In the meantime, I get involved with as much tutoring as I can, and I can’t wait to help you out!

Georgia

BA in French and Arabic, Oxford

Hello! My name is Georgia, and I recently graduated from Magdalen College (Oxford) with a BA in French and Arabic ab initio (First-Class Honours).

My study of French and Arabic has varied from eighth-century Islamic texts to work of Montaigne, the role of Islam in modern politics to cross-cultural views of utopia in the nineteenth-century. I’ve also spent over a year studying, volunteering, and working in France and Jordan over the past four years. This experience has developed me into a flexible tutor with a deep enthusiasm for a wide range of topics.

I’m now pursuing an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies at St Antony’s College, Oxford, where I’ll be studying Turkish and focusing on the relationship between Islam and politics in the Middle East.

How I can support you

I’ve been a French tutor for nearly four years and have helped a wide range of pupils achieve their academic goals, from 13+ entrance exams to A-Level students and Oxbridge applicants.

My lessons are personalised to each pupil, allowing them to guide our study and focus. I’ve found that my pupils benefit most from a focus on grammar, returning to the essential ‘building blocks’ of the French language and increasing the complexity of topics. All grammar topics are constantly reinforced through exercises and translation practice. I’ve developed my own resources to help aid and explain all concepts that we cover.

I’m particularly interested in helping Oxbridge applicants discover French literature for the first time, using my focus on early modern and modern French literature throughout my degree to support and inspire applicants. I’d also be particularly interested in helping anyone applying for studying an ab initio language alongside French.

I love being a tutor and supporting my tutees as they discover more about French language and literature. If you’ve got any questions or are interested in having lessons with me, I’d love to hear from you!

Theo - French tutor

Hello! My name is Theo, I recently graduated with a First from Oxford (St Peter’s College) in French and German (BA).

Over the last five years, I have helped all kinds of students, including some entering less common examinations such as IGCSE and Pre U, some applying to Oxbridge, and some who simply wanted to become more fluent in French or German.

Though I grew up in London, my mother tongue is French and I hold a certificate of proficiency in German at the highest level, C2, denoting near-native to native ability.

How I can support you

I cover every level of French and German, from the earliest stages of internalising basic grammar to fine-tuning style and idiom in argumentative writing. I also offer tutoring in literary translation, writing about literature, and close reading, as well as conversation classes at any level.

At Oxford, I read early modern French literature (1600 to 1750) and modern German literature (1750 to the present day), and was awarded two college prizes and a Scholarship in recognition of the high quality of my work. I was also recently awarded a scholarship to complete a Master’s degree in German literature at Magdalen College, Oxford.

I love teaching languages, and I am passionate about helping students to attain their academic goals. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Bonjour!

My name is Kate, I am a current DPhil student in contemporary French literature at the University of Oxford (New College).

I obtained a B.A. in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Arabic and French) from the University of Cambridge (King’s College). This involved living and studying abroad in France, Morocco and Jordan.

I then completed a Master of Studies (M.St.) in 19th-century French literature at the University of Oxford (New College) in June 2023, and began my DPhil the following October on a full scholarship.

I have extensive teaching and tutoring experience in French language and literature. I have been tutoring for over 5 years and have worked at various schools as a language teaching assistant. I have taught commentary and essay writing as well as translation classes. I am currently shadowing professors of French literature at Oxford as part of my DPhil and applying for teaching jobs.

How I can support you

I am particularly interested in assisting undergraduates and masters students with French literature. My specialty is literature of the contemporary period (19th, 20th and 21st century), however, I have studied aspects of the 17th and 18th centuries as well.

I can also help with Oxbridge entry, preparation for A-level and International Baccalaureate exams. I love getting students engaged with French books, explaining different themes, literary devices and effects. I often prepare factsheets for my students that summarise key secondary reading, practice commentary and essay questions and translation passages. If this sounds like it might be useful for you, please do get in touch!
